90-Year-Old Hopes to Inspire Others

Barney Carbajal, a 90-year-old retiree, volunteers at the Network of Community Ministries food pantry in Richardson instead of playing golf. He believes he owes something back to the community for the many opportunities he has had in his life. Along with 80 other volunteers, Carbajal helps run the community market that supports around 400 families every week. The organization refers to them as neighbors rather than clients, as they could be anyone in the community. The pandemic has exacerbated food insecurity in the area, and the food pantry has become an essential resource for many families. Carbajal finds it fulfilling to help the working poor and feels he gets more back than he gives. The Network of Community Ministries serves a 46-square-mile area that includes Richardson, parts of Dallas, and parts of Garland. Read more
